Childline helps children and young people 24 hours a day, every day of the year and has been a place for children to turn for 30 years. But right now we can only respond to 3 out of every 4 children who need our help. Just 4 hours out of your week can help thousands of children and young people. Sometimes all they need is someone like you who has the time to listen.
We offer a confidential service for children and young people across the UK. Working in one of our centres, you will engage with children and young people by phone, online or by e-mail. Listening at first and then offering the support that they may need from us; whether it is information, advice or just someone to listen or talk to.

We are seeking volunteers who can commit to 51 hours of initial training and mentoring. Following this volunteers need to be able to commit to a 4¼ hour weekly shift at the same time each week, for a minimum of 40 weeks a year, plus regular workshops. We ask for a minimum commitment of one year following training. There are various times when you can volunteer, whether available in the morning, afternoon, evening or at the weekend. Particularly helpful is availability on a Tuesday evening, Friday afternoon or a Sunday.
Childline provides full training for successful applicants. Whilst no formal qualifications or experience are required, we are naturally looking for people with good listening skills who are motivated to make a difference to the lives of children and young people. All volunteers will go through an initial training programme on the ChildLine counselling model, and on going topic based training. Volunteers are supported before, during and after shifts through briefing sessions and supervisions. Volunteers will receive out of pocket expenses, such as fuel or travel fares.
ChildLine counsellor training consists of 8 modules, an observation shift, midway assessment, a mentored shift and final assessment. Every aspect of the training is mandatory so please ensure you are available for the entire course when signing up. Interviews for this role will take place on a Monday morning, Wednesday afternoon or Thursday afternoon. Where difficulty in attending during office hours, the staff team in Aberdeen will look to offer an evening interview. Volunteers will be asked to provide all relevant documents for the NSPCC to carry out the checks necessary as part of their safeguarding procedures, this includes a Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check.
